What is 14K Gold-Filled?

Gold-filled is a durable and ecological alternative to solid gold

Gold-filled is a precious metal of exceptional quality. Recognized for its durability, it does not tarnish or chip, unlike gold plated jewelry. Gold-filled can be worn everyday and will remain beautiful for a lifetime, as long as it is well taken care of. It is a brass base covered with a solid layer of 14K gold. The weight of gold applied to the base is 1/20 of the total weight, or about 100 more times gold than in regular gold plated jewelry.

When I discovered the wire wrapping technique, I had never heard of "Gold-Filled". It is a metal mostly used in English-speaking countries. It is slowly being introduced into France but we mostly see shops that sell either solid gold or gold plated. It instantly became obvious that if I wanted to sell gemstone jewelry, I should be using this quality precious metal. It was however challenging. Gold-Filled wire is very expensive in France and the shops only sell it by small quantity. I had to turn to the US market which holds the patent. I can buy it in bulk and that is very practical.

In order to be in compliance with the French law, I need to stamp my makers mark with my initials (ACM) on each of my gold-filled and Sterling Silver jewelry. The gold-filled stamp is a square shape and the sterling silver stamp is a rhombus shape.

Why you should choose Gold-Filled jewelry :

Gold Filled is a very interesting alternative to solid gold:

* hypoallergenic: if you tolerate gold, you will tolerate gold-filled

* very resistant: it does not tarnish, it does not flake. If you take care of it, it will last a lifetime

* environmental friendly: gold is a precious metal whose exploitation is often very polluting. Choosing gold-filled rather than solid gold is a gesture for the preservation of the environment.

How to take care of your jewelry:

Soak your jewelry in warm water and use a regular soap. Gently scrub it with a soft toothbrush to clean it. You can also use your fingers and gently rub. Rinse your piece of jewelry and pat it down using the polishing cloth (included in your order) to shine & polish.
